5 Hacks for Healthy Lips

How many of you are always dealing with chapped or dry lips? You are not alone. We are always applying lip balm and we make sure to have one in every pocket of every jacket and purse. There are a few people out there who never seem to need lip balms like Eva Mendes who credits drinking plenty of water and LL Cool J who’s literally always licking his lips.

Using the same products applied to your skin probably has never worked too well for your lips unless the ingredients work well for both your skin and lips at the same time. The reason is that your skin has 3 different layers, sweat glands, produces melanin, and there are hair follicles. Your lips are a thin layer of stratum corneum ( and what gives it that pink or red hue is a bunch of blood vessels.

Here are 5 hacks that we’ve personally use to help us combat dry, flaky, peeling, bloody lips year round.

French Girl Organics Lip Polish

Lip polishes are amazing for helping to exfoliate the dead skin off your lips. Honestly, any kind of sugar and coconut oil scrub will do if you’re all about DIY. The best way to use this is after a shower when your skin has already been soaked in water for like, 32 minutes, and at that point will easily slough off. The sugar helps slough off the dead skin and the oil base will help keep your lips moisturized.

It’s all about the water again. Depending on your activity level, you will need to drink more or less water. Some may say that drinking water doesn’t really help with chapped lips. Of course, water isn’t the only remedy and that’s why there are 4 other tips here. The simple fact is that when you don’t drink enough water, your entire body including organs and cells get dehydrated. Your body will then reserve water for your largest and most important organs like the brain and heart, the two things that pretty much keep you alive. Your lips are last on the list of priorities so drink extra for your pout.

Baobab Organic Lip Balm with Baobab Oil

Lip balm is seriously such a personal thing. We all have our favorites and we tend not to stray very far from what’s been working for us. Be it Vaseline since that really actually works for some people or coconut oil, find the one that works best for you. Sometimes organic lip balms can be a little gritty or sit on top of your lips instead of really getting in there and keeping your lips supple. We love Baobab for its super smooth glide on application and actually moisturizing lip balms. They also have a mint flavor which does not irritate even the most sensitive lip skin.

Cool Mist Travel Humidifier

Humidifiers aren’t just for babies, they work wonders for adults. Dry air from the heater running in the winter, air conditioning running in the office, dry hotel air, or living in a dry climate can all make your lips hurt. There are a ton of different types of humidifiers out there so definitely take some time to do the research one which one will best fit your lifestyle. We love this travel one that’s small, lightweight, charges using a USB cord, and you can leave it right next to your bed when you travel or even when you’re in the car and feeling parched. Also, did you know Mariah Carey sleeps with 27 humidifiers running? Let’s be 1/27th of the diva she is with 1 humidifier.

Avoid Mint/Peppermint Products

All the lip plumpers tend to use some kind of mint or peppermint extract/oil which can actually make your lips worse. Some of us don’t have a problem with this ingredient which is great. But, others don’t realize that this is what might be causing further irritation, redness, and dryness. So, if you find your lips burning after applying anything with like a menthol type of ingredient, it might be time to find something else.
